In 1604 Pierre Dugua, Samuel Champlain and 77 other men established a settlement on Saint Croix Island. This settlement therefore predated both Jamestown (1607) and Plymouth (1620). The winter was harsh and almost half the colonists perished from disease. In the spring, native people brought food and helped the French survive and adapt to North America. An international committee has been preparing for the 400th anniversary of this event. This international historic site which can be viewed from sites on US route 1 in Maine and Highway 127 in NB. Plan to return for the commemorations in 2004.
