The gorge stretches over 1.5 km (1 mi) and boasts cliff walls up to 70 m (230 ft) high. Take a guided tour of the falls by pontoon or on foot and learn how the gorge was slowly carved out over millions of years by the cascading waters of the St. John River. Reversing Falls This phenomenon is caused by the tides in the Bay of Fundy. In high tide, the tides actually rise higher than the river level, and force the river to flow upstream, even to the point of causing uphill rapids in the river.
